William L. Haskell, Ph.D., FACSM, is a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is one of the founders and is deputy director of the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention. Over the past 26 years at Stanford, he has been an investigator for a number of major studies investigating the prevention or management of cardiovascular or other chronic disease. A major focus of his research has been the combined role of lifestyle factors, especially exercise, and pharmacological therapy in the prevention of heart attack and stroke. He is the author or coauthor of more than 300 scientific articles, reviews, chapters, and books in the areas of preventive cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, and physical activity/performance. He is a past president of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation.
